Company Picnic

September 18, 2008

One of the nice annual things that my husband and I get to do is attend the company picnic.  It focuses on the families of the employees.  His first year with the company, they did it at a small lake, but it was hot and there wasn’t much to entertain us.  So, for the past three years they’ve held it at the picnic grounds of Grand Caverns.  The location is awesome because everyone gets a pass to take the tour of the impressive limestone caverns.  They also hire a professional photographer to take family photos.  And there are activities set up in the shade to entertain the children. This year there was an artist making caricatures of the children; other years there have been face painting and foam visor crafts.

Mamá Chabela, my husband’s mother who was visiting from Peru, was included in our photo and got to see stalactites and stalagmites for the first time in her life.  It was so nice and cool down there, 200 feet below the surface.  The guide told us that the temperature inside the caverns is the average temperature of the area.  So, in Virginia, the caverns are 54 degrees year-round.  When the guide turned off the lights and showed us that our eyes would not adjust to the darkness, my son whispered that it was spooky.  She talked about the ghost-like formations that are in a long hall where Civil War soldiers visited and signed their names on the walls.  When the cave was first explored in the early 1800s, they named the most prominant formation “George Washington’s Ghost.”  It was really great timing that my mother-in-law got to attend the company picnic and visit this tourist spot.

My daughter says that her favorite activity that day was rolling around in the inflated ball.  She accidentally did a backwards roll while inside the ball, so she’s very impressed with herself.  I couldn’t believe how willing she was to find out what it felt like to roll around, despite the heat and humidity of being enclosed in plastic.

Thanks, Kemi. We did have a good time, but the food wasn’t as good this year as it has been before. The activities were fun. Isn’t it hard to believe that that picture was taken at an outdoor picnic? It looks like it was taken in a studio.

That’s a nice photograph of the family! That sounds like so much fun. My husband’s employer has something similar too, the first Saturday of June. With kiddy games and carnival rides. Baby girl rode on the mini scrambler and the pony rides while Little Man wouldn’t. This year it had rained before it opened and the fields were all muddy. the bouncy’s are always fun, but they were not set up this year ~sigh~

Thanks, Randomability. I like that our picnic is in September. Sorry you had to attend your husband’s get-together in the mud. I never know what to call those inflated playgrounds. They are fun, but they were in the sun. My son wouldn’t play on them because they were too hot.
